About her Art
ZyklusderAusgeburten The artist Katrin Könker, born 1988 in Bonn (Germany), presents in her exhibition "Zyklus der Ausgeburten - Period 1 & 2" some of her expressive, oversized portrait paintings, which were created last year (2022) with a total of around 50 individual works by her hand. The current catalog of works 01.2023 shows 27 selected works from both periods. The first period included a very dynamic, almost abstract-looking portrait series, dominated by expressive brushstrokes, partly open contours, and the use of neon tones. In the second period, the artist focuses on extreme light-dark contrasts and neglects colored influences. The portraits of this period appear immersed in deep darkness. They seem more realistic in painting style, but convince through their expression with impulsive, seemingly random color splashes. In this way, the artist allows heavy emotional expressions to be experienced as fleeting moments in many different faces. The artist herself had no concrete faces in mind during the creative process. Rather, they are profound feelings and emotions that the artist conveys wordlessly through random human portraits, grimaces, and masked faces. Recently, the artist was honored by the European Museum of Modern Art as a contemporary ambassador of her country with one of her works from this series. The work "The Thoughtful," from the second period, can henceforth be considered a permanent loan in Denmark. It is thus part of the contemporary art collection of Europe. The artist conveys with her expressive yet realistic painting style strong emotions that unmistakably recall the heaviness of the present time, marked by war and inflation. The dark faces are focused on their individual expression and do not claim to please the viewer. The artist's goal is to move! The painting style appears impulsive and dynamic. Partly extreme shading and deep black, hard contours are playfully dissolved by seemingly random splashes of color. As painting media, the artist mainly uses ink and white dispersion paint, acrylic paint, as well as permanent marker in the series of works presented here. The paint is applied with brush and spatula. All works are painted on paper with a thickness of 200g/m². On average, the paintings have an unframed size of 60x80cm-50x70cm and are all in portrait format.
