Her Biography and Curriculum
Antonella Affronti was born in Palermo, on 7-9-1949. Here she obtained her artistic diploma and teaching qualification.
Her first solo exhibition in Palermo was in 1982. In the same year she was invited to Erice to participate in the “Salerniana” where she met the art critic Albano Rossi.
In 1991 she was invited to Mantua to the “Review of painting, sculpture, graphics and poetry”
in 1995 to Malta for the first international biennial, and again in 1995 she was called to Ravenna to participate in the “national painting prize”
In 1996 she was in Rome for a solo exhibition at the ‘Ca D’oro.
It was in the same period that she met the writer Costanzo Costantini
She is part of the “2001” group of Marsala and of the U.C.A.I.
On the occasion of the “bicentenary of the Botanical Garden” of Palermo she was invited to participate in the art exhibition.
Her collaboration with the gallery “Studio 71” in Palermo dates back to 1998
Again in 2001 she was invited to join A.I.A.M. (International Academy of Modern Art) of Rome, and is part of “Graffiti & Addaura Art” contemporary artists in Palermo.
In 2003 she had a solo exhibition in Abano Terme, and participated in the Art Fairs of Forlì and Cremona
In 2005 her artistic and cultural partnership with Antonino G. Perricone and Totò Vitrano began, leading to the formation of the “gruppoerre”.
She has held numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad and her works are in public and private collections.
The Critique
From a review by M. Antonietta Spadaro
…..Today in 2006 that path, undertaken about ten years ago, has led Affronti towards new goals, in her unstoppable and courageous search, supported by a now sure and consolidated craft.
The color thus reveals its infinite ranges and shades with sometimes provocative and disorienting combinations, while disturbing forms come to life, lit by sudden lights. Extraordinary figures, tormented by anguished chromatic filaments, emerge with heroic spirit: are they beings from science fiction? Men re-emerging from distant myths? In any case, they have little to do with the coarse humanity of our time. They recall, even if on a completely different level, De Chirico's mannequins: tragic heroes of another, indeed metaphysical, reality.
Then, in paintings with other subjects, skillful plays of light manage to make new forms (vegetal?) sprout: perhaps an unexpressed, dreamed nature.
Finally, the “wrecks”: memories of dismantled rails, of destroyed boats, from which formal games of great expressive richness arise. They too tell us of something that has changed over time and has lost its original value and meaning and forces us to think, certainly not to escape.
Those men, emptied and silent heroes, express despite everything a great strength, which could constitute a hope... Antonella Affronti has made her expressive register unsettling; this places her among those artists who today can no longer perceive the world as a “beautiful fairy tale”, and therefore art as a reassuring mirror of gentle harmonies.
It is impossible not to share the spirit, the profound reasons that have led to an aesthetic result whose aggressiveness convinces us and forces us to think, certainly not to escape.
