Artistic journey:
I WANT TO OVERCOME GRAVITATIONAL FORCES TO GIVE SHAPE TO DARK MATTER AND DARK ENERGY OF THE UNIVERSE. EVERYTHING ORIGINATES FROM DARK MATTER AND DARK ENERGY, TO UNDERSTAND AND OVERCOME GRAVITATIONAL FORCES.
The works I have created are estroflessioni (Shaped canvas), which I have defined as: "ESTROFLESSIONI 2.0".
Because with my technique I SHAPE THE CANVAS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR ANY REAR SUPPORT, I remove parts of it, I cut, without this compromising the stability of the work, opposing gravitational forces.
I started in 2018, after years of other artistic experiences such as collage and material informalism, to shape the canvas, using wooden and metal templates inserted behind the painting to produce my first estroflessed works.
Later, during some meditations, I asked myself: “Why not shape the canvas so that it can support itself, in a three-dimensional condition, so as not to have any support on the back?”
Consequently, I began to research and experiment with the use of resins, which, mixed with colors, after various attempts, allowed me to shape the canvas as I wished, so that it remains in the chosen position, without the need for any support, wood or metal.
So I eliminated all supports from the back of the canvas and found that everything held perfectly, even with a certain degree of flexibility.
Later I decided to make holes of various sizes and also cuts in the ESTROFLESSIONI.
My cuts and holes are made on a 3D canvas, no longer on a flat surface.
So, understanding that the holes and cuts in the ESTROFLESSIONI are openings towards an additional space, the figures produced in my works leave the plane and continue into the still unknown space of the cosmos.
Infinity and emptiness take shape, a new idea of space is born, understood as dark matter, to be modified; by shaping and piercing the ESTROFLESSA canvas, a new concept is realized on a canvas, the void seen beyond the estroflessed canvas is part of the work, the canvas abandons the flat and rectangular configuration and even what is not in the visible and tangible matter that makes up the work is part of it, DARK MATTER AND DARK ENERGY still unknown to humanity become part of the painting.
"Estroflessioni 2.0 is the collection of the latest works produced by Antonio Gesuele Catananti. Antonio begins his research on the three-dimensionality of the canvas, through the creation of structures that shape it until it becomes three-dimensional.
Following the first experiments, he meditates on the possibility of supports that are able to sustain themselves, developing a technique of fabric modification, whose bends or removals are self-supporting. Without the need for further additions to the frame, Antonio's 'canvas' acquires stability, does not undergo the modifications forced by the law of gravity, becomes a sculptural structure that plays on the visual perception of the observer. The frontal view, as can be seen from the digital gallery, does not allow a complete enjoyment of the work, which requires the physical presence of the observer. As with sculpture, visible at 360° projected into space, Antonio's canvases aspire to become sculptural, moving towards the third dimension.
In fact, Antonio reveals the wall beyond the painting, opens a gap beyond the two-dimensional surface, his canvases give the opportunity to see what is behind, acquiring dynamism and plasticity."
